Do Hats Cause Baldness?

Here’s a statement that you’ve probably heard somewhere – wearing hats will make you go bald. Whether it’s from a grandparent or someone who just doesn’t like hats too much, this thing has been going around for quite a long time.

The good news is – it’s a myth! You are not going to go bald if you love wearing hats. So, don’t shrug off your love for hats and definitely don’t believe everything you hear.

Although you won’t go completely bald, there is a little bit of truth to it. According to experts, traction alopecia can happen if you wear tight hats or beanies all the time. But, there’s a slim chance of this happening to you because it isn’t a common occurrence.

This kind of gradual hair loss is typically caused by the trauma of tightly pulled hair. It usually happens to those who are always in tight ponytails, buns, braids or dreadlocks.

There are also some people who are more predisposed to thinning hair because of genetics or chronic illnesses. If you come from a family with thick and healthy hair, then you will most likely inherit too. If you have a history of pre-mature balding, then you better go easy on pulling your hair too tightly.

Another thing to note is hygiene. Heat, moisture and bacteria can get trapped in the hat and this can cause scalp irritation, which can lead to hair fall. Make sure to regularly clean those hats and beanies!
